Ok, the new movie novelization has totally shaken my assumptions regarding military-type schools such as Starfleet Academy. I just don't get their ranking system. People who haven't graduated yet are called Cadets, right? But while the Cadets (graduates? Kids? PPL IN RED?) are getting their assignments, Spock addresses Uhura as Lieutenant. Then Captain Pike calls her Cadet. But then Kirk has trouble getting the computer to tell him where she is because her location is private, as she is an officer. But she wouldn't really be an officer until she graduated, right? Is it even possible to graduate with the rank of Lieutenant? What the HALE is Uhura's rank??
My head hurts. I am starting to wish I gave a crap about the military.
